Tandem Paragliding Kokol, Kota Kinabalu

This adventure is a day trip taking you out of Kota Kinabalu and into the lower sections of the Crocker Range. From the warm city of Kota Kinabalu, you will be brought to the cooler highlands of Kokol Hill in the township of Menggatal.

Our pilot will take you up to skies from the peak of Kokol Hill to give you a birds eye view of the Menggatal town and surrounding hilly areas. Elevation of take off point is 780m or 2600ft. Distance to landing location is 6km. Enjoy the fresh cool mountain air and the green scenery plus have your experience captured on video.

Eligibility:

Maximum weight 100 kilograms. Slightly heavier participants might be possible depending the size of the thighs as you must be able to wear the tandem harness
Young children can fly, preferrably with a parent. Child will have own harness. Child must understand English language, have a matured mindset to listen and carry out instructions. There is no refund for cancellation.
Participants 17 years and below, must be accommpanied by parent/guardian

Best time for Flying

As long there is good weather and the right wind, we can fly. As we have no way of controling the environmental factors, we wait onsite for best conditions. June to July and March to April are usually the best time.

0900 Meet pilot in Menggatal town. You will find own way to Menggatal

1000 Arrive location for paragliding setup

Take flight when conditions are perfect. Have your own picnic.

On a good day, flight time will exceed 10 minutes. You will see not only the township below you but Labuan Island, Tuaran township and maybe a glimpse of Mount Kinabalu if wind conditions are good.

Landing will be in Menggatal town.

Tandem Paragliding Ranau, Sabah Highlands, Borneo

Ranau is a town and district 108 km east of Kota Kinabalu and 227km west of Sandakan. Its name is derived from the Dusun language ‘Ranahon’ to mean paddy fields. It is a cool hilly region with mountainous views all around. This makes the perfect setting for paragliding scenery.

Ranau has diverse flora ranges from rich tropical lowland and hill rainforest to tropical mountain, sub-alpine forest and scrub on the higher elevations. Apart from its small town charm, there are other nearby attractions of Mount Kinabalu, Kinabalu Nature Park, Kundasang town, Gunner Cleary Memorial, Kundasang War Memorial, Mesilau Nature Park, Sungai Moroli Fish Spa (Kampung Luanti), Poring Hot Springs, and the Sabah Tea Garden. It is also famously known as the ending point of (World War II) Death March Trail where 3 large groups of Australian POWs walked to their deaths from treacherous jungle conditions, illness or having been killed by their captors.

Ranau was known to have the largest mining project in Malaysia, the Mamut Copper Mine, before it ceased operations in 1999. Ranau town is worth a visit and an overnight stay. It is mid-sized and has many eateries, convenience stores and many hotels with simple amenities. There are also homestays in the area. You will need your own transport to see the attractions in Ranau area as they are not in reach by foot.

Tandem paragliding activity restrictions

Participants aged below 17 years should be accompanied by parent/guardian
Passenger minimum weight 30kg / maximum weight 110kg

Itinerary:

Meet 10 am designated Ranau location. Paragliding take off point is located about 7km from Ranau town or minimum 15-minute drive.

Flights are conducted from 10.00am – 5.30pm. You will need to keep your day free as flight is subject to ideal weather conditions.

Upon arrival pilot will setup equipment. Once setup, a briefing will be provided by the pilot then we wait for the right moment to take off. Rain and the wind will come and go so we wait for the right conditions for the best flight opportunity.

Flight duration is at least 7 minutes. If winds are good, maybe longer.

Unless it is raining, most of the time Ranau provides good paragliding conditions year round.

All passengers are advice to wear T-shirt, long pants, and sports shoes.
